Most of us know that the chrysalis is a stage between a caterpillar and a butterfly or moth. It is a place where tremendous transformation occurs pretty much behind a protective covering.

The caterpillar becomes the chrysalis when it is ready for its metamorphosis. Everything the caterpillar has done up to that time leads to this stage. What is interesting to note is that when the caterpillar has secluded itself into the hard shell all of the cells that originally made it a caterpillar break down into a set of undifferentiated cells that are called imaginal cells.  They are very like stem cells. Once they have de-identified they rearrange themselves into a very different shape in the form of a butterfly. Another interesting part of this is that some of the cells, such as those in the legs, continue to function as they did before. Applying this same process to coaching we see that everything we have done up to the current moment  leads to a place of shift or transformation.
